Beet the heat!

Another season begins at the Roosevelt Grow Collective Garden at the "Growhouse." Last Sunday was our first day back in the garden. It was a blast and we had an outstanding turnout of volunteers. Over twenty people turned up to garden with us in 110 degree weather!

Despite the heat, we all barreled forward with an ambition work plan AND got to break in the brand new tiller we were fortunate enough to receive through our first-ever garden grant - thank you Keep Arizona Beautiful!!!!

With the tiller, we were able to get more work done in one day than ever before. We prepped the entire ROW bed on the South side of the garden, built berms, and tilled composted organic manure into the soil. After one day that entire area is ready for seeds! Such great work.

When they were done with that, our beautiful, hard working, super ambitious volunteers completely leveled and mulched our new outdoor learning area. The outdoor learning area is something we wanted to create for when we have large groups out to Garden, for example the Bioscience High School students who we've newly embarked on a partnership with as part of their Connections Endeavors and Community Action for Nutrition (CAN) programs.

All in all, I was thoroughly impressed with the community effort we had on Sunday and can't wait till this Sunday!

It's gardening season again at the Grow House! Spend Sundays gardening with us from 7 AM to 1 PM. We're currently planting for the Fall Harvest.... pumpkins, squashes, and such. Come in and Grow out!

Good news! We’re shaded!! Kenny, Kelly, and Oscar manned the posts and set the sails one Sunday afternoon and constructed shade structures. Mesh banners found and donated by the neighboring DIG Gallery now shade each of our beds… Community recycling at its best!
The summer sun will take its toll no more on our thriving beds. Come on down and see our garden breathe a sigh of relief!

Calling all volunteers!

Sunday, May 31st
6AM - 4PM

Spend a day in the sun with the gRow house folk and learn about desert gardening and how to reduce water usage with drip irrigation. We are looking for volunteers for the second phase of the irrigation project and welcome all to come help with this special project and/or come by any Sunday to help in the garden. If you are interested in helping on May 31st or have any questions please email us at: growhouse@vegemail.com

*Also, if anyone has any leads on an inexpensive place to rent a trench digger let us know!

We adopted Dennis when we first moved into the gRow house. He was one of a many stray cats that live in the neighborhood. His charm quickly won us over and continues to beguile all our garden visitors.

2009 is sure to be a plentiful year at the Roosevelt gRow Garden, especially with the help of all of you!

We are still plugging away every Sunday from 10am till sunset, and we invite you to stop in to lend a hand on new and current projects, or to just say hey and take a look at what's been happening!

UPDATES

- FEBRUARY begins the new planting season.... We are now looking for members to grow!

- Our "trial plants" grew beautifully in the past few months, and we've been eating many a delicious pepper and feasting our eyes on our short but beautiful sunflowers! Peas, kale and carrots will be ready for harvest soon!!

-Our friends at Food Not Bombs recently donated a compost barrel! ...bring your organic waste (no oils, dairy, or meat) to help make new soil and learn how to compost... it's easier than you'd think!

-We've finished mosaicing 2 of the 5 parking curbs to bring a little color and creativity to the garden... still working on the others... if you need a dose of therapeutic art, this project is sure to provide!

-We've successfully raised the funds during the past few First Fridays to get more composted organic soil, an outdoor utility sink, and (hopefully) more piping to extend the irrigation!

PROJECTS HAPPENING CURRENTLY/SOON:

-Filling last two beds with soil

-Mosaicing

-Pouring cement pavers for patio work area

-Laying PVC in areas that have not been irrigated yet

-Xeroscaping the front to create a space to relax and have garden dinners!

As you can see, we have much to do in the next few weeks! We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!!

Radio Phoenix is a non-commercial, volunteer-driven community radio station based in Phoenix, Arizona. We are just starting up, and looking for both volunteers and financial support. We are currently broadcasting 24/7 online. We are working to secure a public FM radio license from the FCC that can cover significant portions of metro Phoenix; email Kaja Brown, Radio Phoenix General Manager at kaja@radiophoenix.org for more information on how you can help!Radio Phoenix will provide a mix of programming that includes music (80%), news & public affairs (18%), and special events/experimental shows (2%). Our music programming will be focused on indie rock, urban, and world as well as local artists and specialty genres. Oh yeah... and anyone can be a DJ! We are currently looking for innovative show ideas and general rotation DJs. Let us know what your great ideas are. We are especially interested in people that have prior radio experience. winter sunflowers!?

We got to planting our live fence of sunflowers a little late this year in August/September. They have grown just shy of waist height and are starting to bloom. My friend, Rika, told me last night that they look like they are cold. I think she's right.

the FIRST first friday of 2009!

As we rang in the New Year we asked First Friday guests to hang up their "dirty laundry" from 2008 in the gRow gallery. Responses ranged from the fairly innocent "I ate my brothers ice cream (every time he bought some)" to the malicious "I don't tell girls about my STD".

The gRow House has irrigation!

With the help of A Dye Design and Hands On Greater Phoenix The gRow House now has irrigation! On "Day for Downtown" 2008 A Dye Design and a group of wonderful volunteers installed the irrigation with generous equipment donations coordinated by Hands On Greater Phoenix. The new irrigation system brings water to all of gRow's trees, three beds, the live-fence of sunflowers, and makes it possible to have five rows of crops in our West garden.
